Novosibirsk Philarmonia


Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra has been well-known outside Siberia for a very long time. It has become a cultural wealth of not only the city of Novosibirsk and the Siberian region but of the whole Russia. According to the opinion of some foreign and Russian critics, musicians and audience, the orchestra can be «rated at the same level as the orchestras of Moscow and Saint-Petersburg» «…it is one of the most splendid orchestras of the present days: and the way these outstanding musicians played «Sheherazade» by Rimsky-Korsakov in the second part was just dazzling. Arnold Kats achieved maximum with his orchestra with minimum of gestures.» («Nice-Matin», France). According to the experts’ rating, published in all-Russian national edition of «Musical Review» № 12, 2012, Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra is named among the top teams of Russia and is included into the first group together with the best orchestras of Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Set up in 1956 and headed by the People's Artist of the USSR, laureate of the National Award of Russia, professor, Arnold Kats (1924–2007) till his decease in January 2007, had tours to big and small cities and towns of our country, participated in numerous international musical festivals: «White Nights» (Leningrad), «Russian Winter» (Moscow), «Christmas evenings», Russian music festival in Vienna, «March days» (Bulgaria), Bernstein music festival, Festival «Ear» (Erlangen, Germany,1999), Piano Festival (France, 1995,1996), «Days of Iberia music» (Spain), Classic music Festival in Cannes (France, 1996), Spivakov festival (Colmar) and many others.

In June 2002 the orchestra was invited by Moscow State Philharmonic Society to have a concert in Tchaikovsky Great Hall on the occasion of its 80-year anniversary. In November 2002 in the frames of the project «Traditions heirs», it was also invited by Saint-Petersburg department of The Union of Concert workers of Russia on the occasion of 300-year anniversary of Saint-Petersburg. A concert in the Great Hall of Saint-Petersburg Philharmonic was a musical gift to the Great City.

The great event that is considered to become an apotheosis of the jubilee year and as the most important in the history of the orchestra took place on 8 June, 2006. The Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra was honored to take part at the I Festival of World symphony orchestras, devoted to the state holiday «The Day of Russia».

In the unique action held for the first time and organized by the Association of symphony and chamber orchestras of Russia at the Column Hall of the Dom Sojuzov the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of A.Kats performed among the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (conductor Z.Meta), the Toskanini Philharmonic Orchestra (conductor L.Maazel), Academia of St.Martin in the fields (conductor K.P. Flor), the Philharmonic orchestra of Radio France (conductor M.V. Chung). “Carmen”-Suite by Schedrin — Bizet and the Fifth Symphony by Tchaikovsky were performed. The President of Russia Vladimir Putin was present at the concert.
In April 2009 the orchestra toured to St.Petersbourg and Moscow, in summer 2010 — to Perm (the concert was dedicated to the 200-year anniversary from the birthday of R. Schumann and 170-year anniversary from the birthday of P.Tchaikovsky).
In September-beginning October it took part in the Festival «Stars at Baikal» (Irkutsk) and «Crescendo» (Tyumen) — artistic director D. Matsuev.
In May 2012 the Orchestra under the direction of maestro Rinkevicius performed a concert in one of the largest concert halls of China — Oriental Art Center by the invitation of the organizers of Shanghai Spring International Music Festival. The leading orchestras of the world were presented by Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra.
In October 2012 the orchestra toured to the island of Usedom (Germany, Poland), Vilnius, Tartu, Johvi, St.Petersburg, Moscow.
